Austen is a Learning & Development professional and has worked across university, private training, and corporate L&D for over twenty years.Experienced in classroom administration - in particular the complex timetabling arrangements of Victoria University growing from 9,000 to 15,000 students without increasing its teaching room stock. Has recruited and led teams of tutors at a course and campus level. Has designed and delivered an extensive range of both online/in-person training products for Carich 'Computer Gym'​ (also deployed by Te Wananga o Aotearoa) for NZQA National Certificate courses, and also corporate training for Housing Corporation, Public Trust, and Inland Revenue. Won the ‘Most Successful Project Implementation of 2007’ in the Computerworld Excellence Awards as part of an Inland Revenue project team where he held both the lead Communication and Training roles.Since 2007 he has focused on the then recently deployed Moodle learning management system at Inland Revenue. He has designed, commissioned and implemented over 300 customisations to this site - some of which have been up streamed into core Moodle and many more are incorporated in the Totara corporate distribution of this learning management system. He has grown the site from dozens of courses to over 2,700 - many of which are created by in-house staff he has trained and supported. The site itself has become a core business tool and visited by around 20% of all staff each day.Austen has leveraged both open source software and its ethos in his work. This is has been recognised in winning the Open Source in Government category at the 2010 NZ Open Source Awards for 'IRD’s use of Moodle', and in 2012 as a judge in these awards.
