My journey from a professional DJ, performing under Brodanse and Austen/Scott at the UK’s top nightclub, fabric, to an entrepreneur, has been marked by a constant push against the boundaries of music and education. Early collaborations with the likes of Grammy-nominated Groove Armada and deals with Armada Music and Sony UK laid the groundwork for a deeper dive into the transformative world of music education. In 2016, I co-founded FutureDJs, introducing DJing into schools in a pioneering partnership with Pioneer DJ and UK exam boards. This effort was complemented by the world’s first graded DJ exams with the London College of Music and a seminal book, ‘FutureDJs — How To DJ’, in collaboration with Faber Music. This journey of innovation continued as we transitioned to PLAYvirtuoso in 2019, with the goal of democratising access to world-class music education. Since then, we’ve achieved milestones that are reshaping the landscape.Key Achievements:Strategic Leadership: Guided our team through a pandemic, a critical pivot, and into a transformative partnership with Spotify to develop an innovative courses area, launching over 50 courses in the Spotify app.Technological Advancement: Welcomed Chris Byatte, co-founder of Chillingo and a mobile gaming pioneer, as our Chief Technology Officer (non-exec). Chris’s expertise in technology and gaming is propelling PLAYvirtuoso’s tech-forward strategy, including the development of our technological capability, laying the groundwork for sophisticated systems to manage partnerships and financials. Investor Confidence: Over £5M Raised – Attracted top-tier investors from Disney Streaming, Airbnb, and Live Nation, showcasing our compelling vision and execution capability.Certified B-Corp Status: Committing to a balance between purpose and profit.Navigating Challenges:The true test of our vision came during unprecedented times. Leading PLAYvirtuoso through the pandemic and a significant 2022 market downturn, we faced challenges head-on. Despite a 70% reduction in our workforce and a pivotal shift in our business model, we emerged without restructuring, closure, or compromising our investors’ positions. This period not only tested but ultimately reinforced our resilience, adaptability, and commitment to our mission and team.Future Vision: Our aim to build a new £2.9BN music certification market is more than a goal—it’s a mission in progress.
