About Austin Bentley
Since 2022, I've worked as a mechanical engineer in the engine group at Carrier Transicold, a leading transport refrigeration company based in Syracuse, NY.During my time at Carrier, I have been exposed to the formal and methodical approach to engineering that is more common in well-established corporations. Here I complete standard test procedures to qualify suppliers’ components for our application. I also assist in recreating issues seen in field trial units to help develop production ready solutions. My largest impact, however, comes from my work developing novel ways to manipulate and interpret data from our newly implemented telematics system. This work, coupled with our in-house dyno testing, allowed me to develop a real time fleet monitoring platform that tracks usage characteristics, fuel burn, and component health across multiple product lines.During the fall after graduation, I began working as a mechanical engineer at LC Drives, a start-up company based in Potsdam, NY. The company specialized in producing in-slot liquid cooled electric motors. Unfortunately, the company lost funding and closed its doors in the fall of 2021.While working at LC Drives, I was responsible for several manufacturing fixtures from inception to implementation. Most of my work centered around designing equipment and processes to apply insulation to motor components. I then developed and conducted qualification testing procedures to ensure the insulation met our requirements. The “All hands on deck” environment inherent to that of a startup company taught me invaluable skills and knowledge that would be hard to match at a more conventional entry level position. In 2019, I graduated from Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY with a bachelor's degree in Aeronautical Engineering. While at Clarkson, I was involved in two separate undergraduate research projects. The first being a self-led independent study of channel wing configurations for eVTOL applications. During which, I created a model wing to perform a CFD analysis followed by wind tunnel testing for verification. The second project was a collaborative effort funded through L3-Harris where I worked with team to study the visco-elastic properties of composite materials. I was tasked with developing a cost-effective design for an array of fixtures to be used in long term creep stress test. I also determined the stress-strain relationship using an MTS machine and multiple displacement measurements. These experimental findings would then be implemented into FEA packages to improve predictions of material behavior.
