Profile bio

About Austin Cameron

I am a current Research and Development Mechanical Engineer at Sandia National Laboratories. I recently completed a Mechanical Engineering Co-op at Collins Aerospace and obtained a master's degree at University of California, Davis in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. I investigated emissions and performance characteristics of gaseous hydrogen co-firing with a hybrid rocket propulsion system of gaseous oxygen and ABS fuel grain for my master's thesis research. I received my bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Arizona State University Polytechnic in May 2021 where I completed undergraduate research at ASU's Laboratory for Energy and Power Solutions, creating strategies to significantly reduce design time of rural microgrid systems in Niger, Africa utilizing custom data modeling techniques and power engineering software. I have extensive mechanical design experience in SolidWorks (Certified Associate's), CATIA V5, and Creo. I am proficient in performing static structural, thermal, modal, and random vibration finite element analysis utilizing SolidWorks and Ansys. I have experience in geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) designs per ASME (Y14.5) in industry to convey functionality and fabrication. I have experience programming in MATLAB, Simulink, LabVIEW, XENDEE, and Python. I also have manufacturing experience (welding, mill, lathe, additive) and am a former member of Arizona's SpaceX Hyperloop Competition Team (CAD / Manufacturing) and Society of Automotive Engineers Formula 1 (Aerodynamics). My interests are in novel propulsion systems that can be utilized in the future of space exploration.

Mechanical Engineering Co-Op

Phoenix, Arizona, United States

Designed exterior lighting systems for fixed and rotary-winged military aircraft. Performed component modeling, tolerance analyses, and material research for designs. Completed finite element analyses to identify design vulnerabilities and areas to improve resilience. Used ASME drafting and GD&T practices to convey design functionality for manufacturing.

May 2021 - Sep 2022

Mechanical Engineering Intern

Phoenix, Arizona, United States

Designed a triaxial vibration fixture for environmental stress screening of a contracted aircraft position / anti-collision lighting product. Conducted random vibration and static structural finite element analysis to identify design vulnerabilities for improving resilience. Utilized standard ASME drafting and GD&T practices to convey design functionality.

Jun 2020 - Aug 2020

Modeler And Data Analyst

Laboratory For Energy And Power Solutions

Created strategies to significantly reduce design time of rural microgrid systems. This included translating network GIS topology and load data of remote villages in Niger, Africa into one-line power models in the power engineering software XENDEE by utilizing custom data translation processes. These models were utilized to visualize asset sizing.

Jun 2019 - May 2020

Cad / Manufacturing Team Member

As a member of the materials and manufacturing team, I utilized Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding to manufacture carbon fiber / foam composite sandwich structures for the shell and chassis components of the pod design. As a member of the computer-aided design sub team, I utilized SolidWorks to model subsystems. I ran finite element analysis on models.

Aug 2017 - May 2019

Section Leader

I led a first-year undergraduate class by helping the students get acclimated to the university. My responsibilities include lecturing on topics such as campus resources, extracurricular involvement, and career opportunities.
