Began my design career at M.I.T. in the Creative Engineering Laboratory, teaching creative thinking for three years followed by consulting activities in Boston and New York City. Founded, chaired and developed the curriculum for a new Department of Product Design at N.C. State in (1958-62), focusing on innovation in engineering design within a five-year degree-granting program.Developed and patented a variety of new concepts in the medical/surgical and software fields, building construction, marine, electronics, transportation, consumer and industrial products, and tooling innovations for the extrusion industry. Invented the aluminum extruded continuous geared hinge, used in high-performance building construction and dozens of industrial applications, which was manufactured under the ROTON trade name, and later sold to the Hager Hinge Company of St. Louis. The original designs have since been replicated by most of the major hinge hardware manufacturers following the expiration of the original hinge patents.Designed and manufactured a new generation of similar products, including stainless steel hinges, under the trade name R2 HINGE LLC. After a successful market introduction, R2 Hinge was sold to Ingersoll Rand in 2013. All of these products enjoy widespread usage, including all U.S. Embassies throughout the world as well as thousands of school and colleges, hospitals, military,institutional and high-end commercial applications. They are easily identified by an outer sheath which is totally free of knuckles and joins the door to its frame from top to bottom, and have become the benchmark for high performance operation under heavy loads and abusive conditions.Currently providing consulting services in creative thinking, design evaluation and innovative new product development programs.for others.
