In this research role I focused on the relation of macrophage differentiation to mechanical stress in a physiological environment. The aim was to elucidate ways in which mechanical stress could be beneficial to tissue regeneration through modulating the inflammatory process.This role required the culturing of a human macrophage cell line and differentiation of these cells. The role also included RT-qPCR technique.

At Regeneron Pharmaceuticals I worked in the cell culture group of the Pre-Clinical Manufacturing and Process Development (PMPD) department. My responsibilities included maintenance and troubleshooting of analytical equipment; small-scale bioreactor operation; high-throughput, small-scale model development; and documentation.Additionally I successfully designed and completed an independent project investigating novel bioprocessing methods. This included a literature review, experimental design and execution and statistical data analysis. The results and conclusions were formally presented to members of PMPD and further documented via notebook entries.During this co-op term, I was able to gain a better understanding of the biopharmaceutical industry. This was achieved through various departmental visits, as well as attending guest speakers and company-wide events.

At Johnson and Johnson Consumer I worked on the Oral Care team in Upstream Innovation. Here I was able to work on new technologies for the Listerine® brand through experimental design, execution and analysis. Through various events I was exposed to the workings of the business, and obtained a broad understanding of the different departments such as Research and Development, Technology Transfer, Supply Chain, Marketing, Finance, etc.During my time I initiated a fundraising effort for Khan Academy. This internal fundraiser was a raffle for the chance to win lunch with the CEO, and it raised $4,275.

In this summer research position I had the responsibility of gathering information on previous studies involving the tissue-engineering of a trachea. This information was used to conduct several preliminary experiments throughout the summer.In addition to this research, I was introduced to proper sterile technique for the culturing of mammalian cells. I cultured several lines of mammalian cells during my time in this research position.

At Mennel Milling I had the responsibility of maintaining the microbiology lab. This entailed quality testing of flour samples for harmful biological organisms and the organization of test results into a company database used for shipping approval.
