    I worked to analyze and improve the dynamic model of an unmanned aircraft in Matlab/Simulink. The UAV is a maritime surveillance aircraft with sense and avoid (SAA) capability for both cooperative and non-cooperative traffic. Lincoln Labs works on simulating and analyzing the safety of the collision avoidance algorithms for this SAA system. My project was to to improve the dynamic model of the aircraft so that it more accurately matched the actual aircraft dynamics over the entire flight envelope. This was accomplished by analyzing the steady state and transient dynamics from simulated flight data from the aircraft manufacturer, and modifying the dynamic model in Matlab to match these dynamics. I was able to increase the number of cases where the position was known within 100 ft from 48% to 98%.

    I worked in the Theoretical Physics division to model laser driven shock experiments.A relatively new method of performing shock physics experiments is through the use of laser driven shock apparatuses. In these experiments, a laser is used to launch a flyer plate at a sample material. My project was to use a radiation hydrodynamics code to simulate what is happening to the flyer after it is launched by the laser. I was able to create some successful preliminary models that ran on the supercomputer. The results of these simulations indicated that the shock waves in the flyer are behaving differently than what was initially expected.
