Hi... 👋🏻. I'm AWS, (Austin Wade Smith - they/them). I'm a designer, ecologist, and creative technologist based in Brooklyn, New York. I'm the Executive Director of Regen Foundation, a US-based non-profit designing a just transition to sovereign regenerative economics, with a principal focus on the transformative potential of decentralized technologies of governance, sensing, and ownership. Im interested in the different ways that living systems interface with socio-technical systems. In both my creative and professional practice I explore how non-humans may directly exert influence on social, legal, economic, and information technologies to foster greater interdependence. At Regen Foundation, I oversee a number of pilots that weave these ideas together in theory and practice in South America, East Africa, South Asia, and the US. One of the primary vessels for this work is called Ecological Institutions.I often teach too. I'm an Adjunct - Assistant professor at Columbia GSAPP, and as well as in the architecture and engineerings schools at Cooper Union. I received an M.Arch from MIT in 2016 with a focus on computational design systems, as well as a B.A. in biology from Colorado College in 2009’ with a focus on plant ecophysiology.I've published and exhibited internationally, both individually, as well as through the office HELLOEVERYTHING which I co-founded in 2014. When I am not explore animism at an infrastructural scale, I love growing orchids, raising moths, and making kites.
