About Austin Warmuth
I enjoy having a career in research and development, everyday is an adventure filled with exciting outcomes and challenging problems that I get to solve. I am proud to be working with cutting edge instrumentation, developing test methods for ceramic matrix composite (CMC) material for jet engine applications.I am passionate about my research and love to share my knowledge and experience with others. I have had the great privilege to mentor many clever graduate engineers, co-ops and interns. Being able to help someone achieve their potential is quite rewarding as well as a source of inspiration to keep developing my own skills and abilities. My role is often hands-on as tests developed in our lab have instrumentation that is novel, data acquisition which is complex and utilize test methods which have not yet been explored by our company or others in our field. Even established methods are particularly difficult to implement on our low strain to failure material, especially when being tested at engine representative temperatures. All of which challenge me and help me grow as an engineer.
Listed skills include Mechanical Engineering, R&D, Engineering, Materials Science, and 22 others.

Principal Materials Test Engineer
Materials Test Engineer
My primary role is to develop test methods for evaluating the performance of CMC material for jet engine applications. The tests support the research and development of new ceramic matrix composite material and engine components. The tests range across multiple scales and complexity such as coupon, sub-element, sub-component and component testing.I am the technical authority for all of Rolls-Royce’s CMC component and bench testing and thus am the technical point of contact for external research conducted with our University partners and external research groups. As described in the about me section, my role is often hands-on due to the testing being complex and new. In addition to test and instrumentation development, I perform data analysis, conduct failure mode investigation and report these results to a global team.On most projects I work among a cross-functional engineering team consisting of experts in methods and modelling, engine component design and material development. To execute tests within our lab I direct daily work, mentor and teach test lab technicians.
Phd Researcher
Conducted laboratory research, material and failure analysis of fretting wear damage of aero-engine spline materials. Characterized damage mechanisms through the study of environmental parameters relevant to engine conditions. Designed a high frequency module to enhance the current fretting apparatus so that fretting wear experiments could be conducted at elevated frequencies, extreme temperatures and under precise control.
Manufacturing Engineering Intern
The aim of this project was to resolve functionally issues with a composite aircraft door. The opportunity entailed inspecting and studying every stage of the manufacture the composite door. Everything from the mold design to its assembly on the aircraft. During which I spent lots of time with the assembly technicians, gaining knowledge on the process listening to their thoughts on potential causes regarding poor door functionally. This internship was of great success as I was able to demonstrate improvement in door functionality and was able to communicate manufacturing issues raised by technicians to full-time engineering staff.
R&D Engineering Intern
This internship comprised of lots of hands on design and engineering. The main focus was aimed at the development of production equipment for plant expansion. During which I worked closely with the R&D engineers, created CAD drawings for components and communicated these designs with the plant technicians. I was even able to help assemble and wire some of the equipment! I was also able to conduct pressure drop tests on some of the future designs for charge air coolers.
Mechanical Engineering Intern
Due to the company's financial status I volunteered in exchange for engineering experience. Here I produced AutoCAD drawings for new product designs, advised the quality department on material requirements for items for the USPS. I also developed a system for color management, including development of a database, compiling extensive work instructions, trained personnel and held a company meeting on how to implement color management in their company. The president of the company was so impressed with my work ethic and enthusiasm he wrote a formal recommendation.
Applications Engineering Intern
Carried out experiments to support a preparatory fluid flow program. Aided both the R&D and Application Engineers with CAD including: AutoCAD, Solidworks and IGI. Conducted research for a self-cleaning air filter, contacted suppliers and discussed modifications to their product to suit our needs. Observed many different manufacturing techniques and methods.
Quality Assurance/ Engineering Intern
Developed a technique and provided the base for an internal standard for spectrophotometry. Improved 3-D modeling skills by exploring ways to represent crate folding by using the sheet metal add-on for Solidworks. Developed communication skills by working with the disabled. Helped develop new applications for their product with the sales department. Was awarded the “Making a Difference” award for outstanding commitment and enthusiasm.
