Staff Systems Quality Engineer

Hanover, Maryland, Us

*Identified a long-term opportunity to save engineering hours by driving improvement of an underleveraged internal tool. Collected requirements across 3 teams (QE, SysEng, and SDET), and argued for features to be prioritized by product owners, which eventually saved each QE 5 hours per week.*Took ownership of a downstream issue that arose from an accelerated feature release by engaging with affected partner teams to mitigate the impact and to collect feedback. Influenced product owners to integrate feedback into the roadmap, resulting in feature improvements turning a challenge into an opportunity.*Implemented and maintained a template for automatic upgrades, establishing it as the source-of-truth for supported upgrade paths, addressing the absence of a structured process for tracking and communicating these paths, saving QE engineers time and effort.*Served on the hiring committee for the QE organization, having direct input into hiring decisions ranging from contractor roles to senior and staff level positions.*Mentored a junior engineer to promotion through bi-monthly discussions focused on operational, strategic, and technical topics.

Jul 2021 - Mar 2024

Senior Member Of Technical Staff

Austin, Texas, Us

* Studied SR-IOV and RSS technologies without prior knowledge, and directed a team of 4 SDEs to write test case coverage for NICs using these technologies. Directed the team in how to build the VMs, configure SR-IOV interfaces and assign to VMs, set up VLANs between the VMs, run netperf testing, and create macvtap interfaces.* Created scripts to run benchmarking tools (HPL, lmbench) to complete within a 15-minute timeframe and provide key data. Involved learning and understanding each benchmark tool, and testing many iterations to compare to full-time runs to yield results within a +/- 5% variance. Scripts were used to troubleshoot within a fleet-wide automated repair system, and to verify overall system performance after hardware components failures are detected and resolved. * Built a tool to run n number of Linux tools in parallel and collect output logs, to be used alongside normal test runs to create data points for behavioral tracking and regression differentiation.* Wrote libraries from scratch to collect data from the OS and other sources, parsed into data structures. Covered individual components (CPU, disk drives, network interfaces) and OS settings (RPM packages, kernel mods).* Constructed Python scripts to build a VM infrastructure on baremetal hardware to support development work of SDE and Data Analytics teams. Services running on the VMs were used by 6+ groups across multiple organizations.* Learned, designed, and implemented Docker images for a new test framework’s Bring Your Own Test initiative which allows for existing test groups to manage their own test environments without heavy code modification. Additionally provides easy integration of existing tests into the new framework.

Quality Assurance Engineer Ii

Seattle, Wa, Us

*Performed and managed up to 12 qualifications at a time from start to finish that included NUDD and lead platforms. *Worked with Subject Matter Experts to understand the purpose of new hardware components by identifying test cases and creating test plans. Implemented all test plan features into python scripts providing 100% code coverage that will be used in the majority of new platforms.*During test code migration to a new test framework, acted as the gate between framework/test owners and their users by providing in-depth code reviews that focused on the flow of the test, handling of errors, and reporting of errors. With few exceptions, tests were not pushed without my code review and approval. *Incited improvements to logging, standardized on a distinct difference between test case failures and test code execution failures, and defined return codes so that results can be easily generalized at a glance. Debug and troubleshooting time was significantly reduced, and emphasis on catching code failures improved test code design across the organization.*Mentored new employees on our testing and automation as well as troubleshooting concepts: which logs to check, understanding the errors in those logs, connecting with experts as needed, and where to look in the code for debug.*Coordinated and executed training for numerous members of HW Engineering both inside and outside of the Qualification Lab on its processes and procedures. Trainees included HW Engineering's VP and Business Operations Manager.
