It’s funny how things find their own level. Several years ago, deep into a position in magazine and newspaper advertising sales at nearly all the legal media companies, some even twice, I kept dreaming of a marketing position in a law firm. Right or wrong, I constantly came up against the circular argument saying I couldn’t work in a law firm because I hadn’t worked in a law firm (huh??). As it happens, I just kept developing and learning from some excellent law firm marketing talent.So the good thing for me is that in my career at the publishing companies, I was working with dozens of law firm marketing professionals over the years putting together some very effective marketing, business development, and thought leadership tools and tactics. Ideas such as:• Thought leadership content – for myself as well, having written and spoken a few times about things that drive me. • Custom ideas such as industry surveys• Events to position the faculty as leaders in front the correct audiences • Developing and showcasing expertise to groups and associationsThen one day a few years ago it happened. I was able to speak with a law firm about becoming its first marketing director. For these last few years I am able to use many of the tools and tactics I had the good fortune to help develop while working side by side with some of the most respected law firm marketers out there, but for a different kind of firm. Maybe not getting a law firm marketing position in the past was a good thing for me?
