Research AssistantVirginia Tech Apr 2019 - May 2021I have been studying the Biosynthetic pathway of Lysinibacillus parviboronicapiens (Lp). This includes the ice nucleating ability of the bacterium, whereas it can induce supercooling within water droplets to form a crystallization pattern that results in ice formation. After observing certain gene clusters as responsible for this activity, an active strain of Lp was compared with an inactive mutant of Lp to observe the differences. The objective of this project is to recognize that the gene clusters are responsible for ice nucleating activity (INA) by observing less ice formation from inactive strains where such genes were altered. From here, we intend to analyze the fitness of Lp to understand why and how it adapted INA. To do so, the bacterium has been submitted to different environmental conditions. We will be observing the bacterium's ability to retain INA when under selective environmental pressure and when there is no such pressure present. Overall, the objective is to learn as much as possible about the bacterium and its properties as they relate to ice formation. -

While this REU did not occur, the experience allowed me to undergo a rigorous application process and communicate my intellect on a variety of subjects. The research conducted during this internship included experimental genetic manipulation and analyzation of data using biological algorithms produced on site.
