As a full time Audio Video (AV) technician for a 4 Diamond, and AAA rated Curio hotel and conference center, I have gotten to learn a whole new field that I knew nothing about beforehand. Before I made my way in the realm of audio visual work I was an Ice rink coordinator (Management)/ Shift supervisor and ice resurfacer. In terms of the ice career field, I worked from the very bottom to the top in the local level of the field just shy of becoming a general manager of a facility or getting a NHL recognized ice certification. I started off as a rink installation hand for a big name conference/ event center. I did everything from installing the dams that hold the water in, installing the arena boards and glass to making the ice, painting the lines and maintaining the ice surface for professional hockey teams. I worked that position for about a year where I left for a better opportunity at a year round ice rink facility. I started off as a front desk attendee/ ice hand but shortly after I got promoted up to shift supervisor and ice resurfacer where I maintain the ice for Virginia Tech men’s hockey team. I also work under their head coach, Joey Mullen, for this period of time. I was a shift supervisor for about a year and half where I was promoted again to the ice rink coordinator (Management). I reported to the GM as well as helped run and maintain the ice rink and its daily tasks of operations. Sadly due to difference of opinions on covid 19 I resigned from the company. In this time of transition I explored other career fields and landed at my current employer, The Hotel Roanoke. I initially started in their conference services department moving tables and chairs for events where I quickly transferred into the audio visual department where I have been working since. As stated earlier I knew nothing about audio visual when I started this position but with the guidance and teachings of my manager and supervisor. I became a star audio video technician for the hotel. I learned a lot with my time here from audio mixing, virtual hybrid meetings, AV conference setup styles, signal splitting over multiple types of video cables, as well as live production and much more. In addition to this, client hospitality is very important and I am proud to say that this is a core value I get to achieve on a daily basis. I hope with time to come to continue to grow in the audio visual field and one day move up the chain of command and take on more important roles.
