About Austin Wallace
Passionate about solving problems: Solving problems in data, solving problems with people, solving problems for business. I care a lot about optimizing, not purely for efficiency, but broadly optimizing the way we work with data and each other, and optimizing the chances of creating something great.I long term optimized my career to give me the opportunity to eventually work my childhood dream job, working with player data for an NHL team, and I'm proud to have done that. I'm also long term looking at how I can impact not just the data directly, but the people who work with that data, and I'm excited to move towards leadership roles in my career. Also, I'm a Team Canada quadball (aka quidditch) player, which is kinda fun.

Architected, owned, and implemented from scratch a end-to-end data NHL tracking data pipeline in DBT and Snowflake. This includes:- Building 20+ models to transform the data from raw into various formats suitable for visualization or further analysis. This includes complex models to deal with matching tracking data on closest utc timestamp, and interpolating data onto a defined regularly spaced time grid.- Building efficient incremental models and automating the ingestion and processing of new data- Productionizing and parallelizing data scientist's python models using vectorized user defined table functions in Snowflake- Implementing custom dbt generic tests to ensure data quality throughout the pipelineAdditionally, I created pipelines for the NHL's regular play-by-play data and prospect data from a third party, using Dagster to orchestrate our pipeline.

Part of RACE21, an internal tech startup within Teck Resources.Responsibilities include:- Taking a leadership role in setting the technical direction within my domain and founding a new squad and onboarding and mentoring my colleagues hired to build it. - Built a service with Terraform, Azure Eventhub, Azure Functions, and Airflow, to enable easy use of the Sendgrid notification service in any project accross RACE21. - Evaluated, designed, and migrated a new alerting service, away from an inflexible alerting system based in PostgreSQL. Data Engineer
Brought on to help build out the backend for a small team from the ground up. In less than a year, our team was successful in disrupting the e-commerce personalization market via our competitive advantages in response time and event-based machine learning, which were enabled by completely rebuilt backend infrastructure.• Owned our entire 40+ endpoint API which enabled our development team to build the platforms that were our competitive advantage as we signed top brands away from our competitors in the personalization space. • Lead a small team to build a flexible integration testing platform from scratch which enabled our non-technical quality assurance lead to easily write test cases which covered our full API, which was key to keeping our uptime at 99.9% or better. • Built out a flexible analytics platform to provide daily analytics which integrated data from multiple sources, while prioritizing the user experience of selecting and modifying the queries being run. The insights from this platform led directly to some of the company’s largest contracts.
Software And Data Engineer
- Developed, and deployed a distributed ETL system composed by 8+ Golang microservices deployed as 200+ pods on Kubernetes clusters ingesting and processing multiple petabytes of data. This system processed, stored, and exposed real estate data across US and Canada.- Part of a three person data team responsible for the data and machine learning needs of the company.- Built the back-end and machine learning architecture of a full-stack application to assist in manually categorizing data. Trained a model to offer predictions on how the data should be categorized, and integrated it into our application.
Machine Learning Researcher
Initially securing an Applied Research - Machine Learning Internship role, the Machine Learning Lead asked me to stay on as a full Machine Learning Researcher in 2017 to complete and launch a visualization system for point cloud data sets containing tens of millions of data points. Key Contributions:- Teamed up with my immediate supervisor to jointly create, roll out, and patent an information visualization algorithm - a massively-parallel and potentially ground-breaking action that can be run on a quantum annealer. This project is slated to be delivered at the NASA-sponsored Adiabatic Quantum Computing Conference in the early Summer of 2018.- Was the catalyst for securing millions of dollars in additional revenues based on my extensive pilot project involvement. I effectively navigated messy disparate data, changing client needs, and poorly-defined delivery requirements to help secure a major investment and strategic partnership.- Was hand-picked by 1QBit's CEO to jointly lead a workshop at a major potential customer's headquarters, thereby strengthening 1QBit's reputation as a leader in the Vancouver machine learning community.
