What I love about my job is the focus in structural engineering as well as the freedom to learn a wide range of skills that comes from working for a small business. Every day I'm rewarded with applying new knowledge to the projects we encounter, and a background in construction helps tremendously. I might spend one day in the field surveying a town center, the next I might be in the office designing a kitchen. Since I was hired at the end of September, 2013, we've taken on 85+ new jobs and counting, at least half of which I've either had a hand in or single-handedly saw through to completion. What I enjoy most about this career are the structural analyses I undertake for our residential clients. Often times these homes were built in the mid-19th century and require a structural update. Seeing how these homes were built with the various materials, methods of construction, and trying to put myself in that time period is what fascinates me most. I take field measurements of various building types and use them to produce accurate existing conditions drawings. I modify these drawings according to the architect's design and eventually use the final design to create sets of construction documents.
