About Austin Williams

I am senior lecturer at the department of Architecture, Kingston School of Art, London; Honorary Research Fellow, 西安交通大学 Suzhou, China and the director of the Future Cities Project. I am also the China correspondent for The Architectural Review (UK).I am the author of "New Chinese Architecture: Twenty Women Building the Future" (Thames and Hudson, 2019) - https://bit.ly/2LaLFln/ and "China's Urban Revolution: Understanding Chinese Eco-cities" (Bloomsbury, Oct 2017) In 2008, I founded mantownhuman [Manifesto: Towards a New Humanism] and co-wrote its manifesto, which is included in the Penguin Classics "100 Artists Manifestos"​ [http://www.mantownhuman.org/manifesto.html]In 2014 I founded China Commentary (Pinglun Zhongguo) research centre opening up a conversation on China on issues of urbanism, education and creativity.I am the author of "The Enemies of Progress: The dangers of sustainability"​ and co-editor of "The Future of Community"​ and "The Lure of the City: From Slums to Suburbs"​. I wrote and illustrated the two Shortcuts books, described by the RIBA as “an eclectic mix of at-a-glance guides to the minefield of regulations, new materials, and technologies that confront building designers today”. I also conceived and convened "Masterplanning the Future: 2012"​, the first international conference on masterplanning in China. I have been the Technical Editor of the Architects’ Journal, architecture critic with BBC London, and transport commentator at the Daily Telegraph.
