About Ava Cherry
As a soon-to-be graduate of The University of Virginia's two-year Accelerated BSN program, I am deeply committed to pediatric critical care nursing. By the time I graduate in May 2025, I will have completed over 700 hours of direct care and shadowing across diverse healthcare settings, including the Pediatric ICU, Labor and Delivery, Neonatal ICU, Medical-Surgical Units, Psychiatry, Cardiac Intermediate Care, and Outpatient Family Medicine. These experiences have strengthened my ability to provide compassionate, evidence-based care while enhancing my communication with patients, families, and healthcare teams.In addition to my clinical work, I am the founder and leader of the Accelerated BSN Peer Mentorship program. My goal is to create an inclusive, supportive environment for new nursing students ensuring their successful transition into the program. I’ve accomplished this by planning and hosting Zoom information sessions, pairing 25 incoming students with mentors, creating comprehensive resource guides, and coordinating networking events with icebreakers.My passion for pediatric nursing stems from personal experiences, further solidified by seven years of volunteer work with Connor's Heroes, a nonprofit supporting childhood cancer patients and their families. Through my involvement, I wrote a blog—The RVA Purple Perspective—to raise awareness for childhood cancer raising over $500 for cancer research and reaching thousands of readers globally. I’ve also given back to the community by decorating bone marrow transplant rooms for long-term patients and assisting with the annual Connor's Heroes Art Ball, the organization's largest fundraiser.I look forward to contributing to a collaborative healthcare team and continuing to grow in a critical care environment, where I can support children and families through their most challenging health journeys.
