About Ava Moattar
I got my BA in environmental studies and minor in ecological restoration at the University of Washington. I am passionate about human rights, fighting climate change, and law. While my educational background is in the environmental field, I am interested in gaining experience in other areas of law as well. My interest in law, human rights, and environmental justice has been fueled by two of the most important women in my life. First is an Iranian human rights lawyer, scholar, and activist, Nasrin Sotoudeh. She has been my role model since I was a teenager. She has been fighting for women’s rights and providing legal defense to political and ideological prisoners in Iran for decades. She has faced years of imprisonment for her work. As an aspiring future attorney, I hope to have the same level of courage and honor as her in performing my legal duties. The second person is Professor Midori Sakura, my environmental science professor at Cascadia College. It was through her that I learned for the first time about the current and future human rights crises caused by climate change and environmental issues. I have experience doing research on topics related to law, policy, and environmental studies. I am skilled in editing, technical writing, and law and policy analysis. You can see a brief list of research papers I have written. One of the cases that I will be covering is the human rights lawyer, Nasrin Sotoudeh, who is sentenced to 38 years in prison and 148 lashes and is currently imprisoned in the Evin Prison. I will then search for effective policy solutions that could help to resolve these human rights issues or open the doors to further negotiations.
