About Avery Heeringa
I'm a recent graduate from Columbia College Chicago, with a degree in communication and journalism. I'm passionate about all things writing, especially with a pop culture/entertainment focus. I'm currently looking for employment, ideally with a writing/communication/editorial concentration. As I recognized my interest in writing, I realized that I wanted to combine my passions and pursue a career that included both. Through previous experiences as an intern at Study Breaks Magazine, an online publication that reaches college students nationwide, I had the chance to write weekly about topics I believed were of interest to the publication's readers. I reviewed new music, concerts I had attended, and explored how music and media collaborate to become a powerful marketing force. Throughout all of my writing, I aimed to bring in a wider cultural context to help support my opinions and thoughts. This opportunity solidified my desire to work for a magazine in a writing role. Though magazine writing and music journalism are my biggest interests, I'm also fascinated by the way pop culture and digital communications intertwine in today's culture. I'm interested in learning about what it takes to make cultural products or even people successful through the use of marketing, public relations and advertising.I also have an extensive background in culinary arts and worked as a cake decorator throughout high school, while simultaneously operating a own baking business I founded. Both experiences enabled me to develop professional skills at a young age and have undoubtedly informed my ability to lead others, especially because of my self-owned and mostly self-led (with help from my mom) baking business, "Avery's Sweet Treats."
