About Avery Heeringa
I'm a recent graduate from Columbia College Chicago, with a degree in communication and journalism. I'm passionate about all things writing, especially with a pop culture/entertainment focus. I'm currently looking for employment, ideally with a writing/communication/editorial concentration. The best way to contact me is via email at Avery.heeringa@gmail.com!For as long as I can remember, I've been passionate about all things pop culture and entertainment. As I recognized my interest in writing, I realized that I wanted to combine my passions and pursue a career that included both. Through previous experiences as an intern at Study Breaks Magazine, an online publication that reaches college students nationwide, I had the chance to write weekly about topics I believed were of interest to the publication's readers. I reviewed new music, concerts I had attended, and explored how music and media collaborate to become a powerful marketing force. Throughout all of my writing, I aimed to bring in a wider cultural context to help support my opinions and thoughts. This opportunity solidified my desire to work for a magazine in a writing role. Though magazine writing and music journalism are my biggest interests, I'm also fascinated by the way pop culture and digital communications intertwine in today's culture. I'm interested in learning about what it takes to make cultural products or even people successful through the use of marketing, public relations and advertising.I also have an extensive background in culinary arts and worked as a cake decorator throughout high school, while simultaneously operating a own baking business I founded. Both experiences enabled me to develop professional skills at a young age and have undoubtedly informed my ability to lead others, especially because of my self-owned and mostly self-led (with help from my mom) baking business, "Avery's Sweet Treats."

Host
Worked as a host of the restaurant. I was part of the team that sat guests, answered phones, made all coffee drinks for guests, and a variety of other tasks. Often helped lead the team in making cafe drinks for guests, and used an electronic waitlist system to seat visitors.
Retail Associate
Summer and Winter Break Part-Time position. Specializing in communicating with customers and cashiering. This location is at the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. With the store being in a busy nationwide retail destination, I adapted to various tasks in a fast-paced environment. My main duty was checking out customers at the register, and promoting our loyalty program and offering to sign guests up for a company card. I often led the team in the number of guests enrolled, and worked my way up levels of employee recognition.
Cake Decorator
After a year of being with the company, I was promoted to be a cake decorator. I worked with a small team of other decorators and completed custom orders and requests from customers. I remained on the cake decorator team for the rest of my time at the bakery, and continued to develop my skills as several other team members came and left. My extended time in this position allowed me to practice my skillset in a variety of tasks from decorating cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, cookies, and several other desserts. As part of this position, I visited wedding fairs to promote the business and was trusted with leadership positions while still being a high school student. This role was extremely collaborative, as the small group of us decorators (usually no more than 4 total) balanced the workload of completing custom orders while also maintaining stock of desserts for the retail storefront. This position undoubtedly plays a large role in my ability to work with others and has fostered my appreciation for collaboration.
Retail Salesworker
I was initially hired as a retail salesperson to sell products in the storefront to customers. I worked amongst a team to sell products to customers and adapted to the long lines that would occur during weekend hours. This position allowed me to learn how to use a traditional cash register and practice using mathematical skills to determine prices, before the company upgraded to using electronic sales systems. A large part of this job was the use of memorization of what's in products, how much they cost, and adding up these costs to reach a customer's total. This position regularly involved working with coworkers to assign roles amongst ourselves for each member to keep the flow of foot traffic moving efficiently. With my prior experience and knowledge of pastries and desserts, I became the retail salesperson who was most comfortable and excited to take customer's cake orders before becoming a decorator myself at a later date. This prior knowledge allowed me to do my job in retail even more successfully.I often worked the opening shift, which entailed making sure the storefront was clean, fully stocked, and good to go before customers arrived early in the morning. When working closing shifts, evaluating stock of remaining product for management happened daily on top of the regular cleaning procedures.
Owner And Head Chef
While I was in 8th grade, I started my own baking business in which I make a variety of custom sweets (cakes, cookies, cupcakes, cake pops, etc.) for friends, teachers, neighbors, and other community members. I ran this business out of my home with the help of my mom. This endeavor immensely grew my leadership capabilities and a confidence in myself. I promoted my orders via my personal social media page on Instagram. I worked on orders most every weekend during school and consistently throughout summers. As my work began to improve through gaining experience I earned opportunities to bake for several large birthday parties and even some weddings. These large orders required lots of planning and often required math to figure out how much of each recipe I'd need to use and the time it'd take to complete. As I grew more serious of this endeavor, I had a logo made and purchased merchandise to give away with orders to promote my business. I also developed a system to figure out what to charge for each of the products while also factoring in time required to complete. I used invoices to bill customers and developed a professionalism through the process. I stopped this business primarily because of school demanding more attention the further on I went. I continued to take orders here and there up until about my senior year of high school.
