Profile bio

About Avery Lam-Hong

Future doctor and mental health advocate. I am a fourth-year student pursuing a double major in Chemistry and Biology for Health Sciences at the University of Toronto Mississauga. After I graduate, I have dreams and high hopes of being able to attend any of one Canada's medical schools. Throughout my time as an undergraduate student, I have developed skills and competencies in leadership, facilitation, verbal and written communication, project management, logistical planning, conflict resolution, cooperation, teamwork, building up teams, and motivating others to put forth 110% into their work, just to name a few. That is not to mention academic skills that I have also honed along my journey, such as researching, reviewing scientific literature and journal articles, critiquing and analyzing papers, cross referencing articles, efficiently using databases, performing lab experiments, academic presentations, and taking every academic pursuit as a means to cultivate my knowledge in various disciplines, as I am a passionate, lifelong learner.Through all of my experiences, I have had the privilege to use them on my path to extensive personal growth, significant development, and self-identity. Within such a short time period, I am truly thankful for the opportunities and positions given to me in order to achieve the greatness that I achieve today. Many students view university simply as an institution where one pays money, takes courses, completes examinations, and then graduates. But for myself, right from the start, I made the most of every opportunity that was presented to me, within my limitations of course, as this is not just an academic institution to receive a degree, but an empowering endeavour to challenge one's academic prowess, think outside the box, engage in meaningful and insightful discourse, and truly discover oneself and the associated idiosyncrasies that make us who we are. So while others leave with a degree, I leave with an experience. An experience deeply ingrained and embedded within the education that I received at the University of Toronto Mississauga, and nothing is more invaluable than that.I have been working in Student Affairs & Services for 3 consecutive years where I have interacted, engaged, and connected with hundreds of students ranging from a spectrum of backgrounds, ethnicities, cultures, academic disciplines and pursuits, and so much more. Although this is not my end goal of where I would like to be, working in this department has been an eye-opening revelation to understand the student experience from other perspectives.
