Head Of Database Group
Group`s area of responsibility is: in addition to support corporate DWH, took on support all internal company systems which have MS SQL Server as a backend. Additional team members were hired. Before the Group was created, systems support teams were responsible for all tasks regarded to RDBMS (different or even missed maintenance plans, lack of monitoring, lack of code review, lack of day-to-day DBA activities)What was made:• Total audit of all MS SQL Servers (2008\2012\2014\2014) was made. Set of recommendations and implementation roadmap was prepared;• Maintenance plans were totally revised and unified;• Designed and implemented new centralized monitoring system;• Designed and implemented new universal and scalable system which provides deployment process for non-prod environments. The process includes transformations and data cleansing; • Implemented code review process for releases regarded to databases; • Developed and implemented plan of migration all environments to MS SQL Server 2017;• Best practices recommendations for IT infrastructure team were prepared. This made it easier to implement new MS SQL server instances in optimal configuration.
Dwh Team Lead. Database Architect.
Team`s area of responsibility is: supporting existing data marts and developing new ones, developing new ETL packages, Tableau server administration. The main problems I faced into were: • Data inconsistency thus DWH was discredited; • It takes huge amount of time to refresh all key marts;• Lack of monitoring of how full and consistent data marts are; • General RDMS performance issues; • Obsolete version of MS SQL Server (2008) did not allow to implement modern data warehousing approaches.Deep analysis and iterative changes to DWH and ETL architecture helped to achieve: • Total ETL durability decreased to 5 hours vs 21 hour before;• Significantly increased the percentage of successful update all data marts before business hours, 97% vs 7% before• Data stay in consistent state even if ETL package fails (data may be not actual for some short period, but must be guaranteed consistent);• General DWH performance and reliability fit end-users requirements;• Planed and implemented migration to MS SQL Server 2016;• Environments segregation according to functional roles.Further improvements in close collaboration with key customers, led to:• Designed and implemented “Data governance tool”, which helps to track and visualize the results of whole ETL process with key control checks;• Designed and implemented centralized monitoring system and system of early notification in case of ETL failures;• Designed and implemented “Data catalog tool” – metadata repository which helps end-users to find data mart which maximum fits the requirements;• The most critical to data actuality marts are refreshing periodically all day around; • Designed and implemented toolset for automation of preparation and publishing Tableau reports to other systems. Tableau API used;• And much-much more…Now DWH is • 2 Tb capacity vs 500 Gb before;• 50+ source systems vs 20 before;• 250+ ETL packages vs 100 before;• 30.000+ queries from end-users to DWH per week vs 12.000 before.
