My name is Avishek Nag and I am a passionate researcher and a devoted educator with a dream to lead and inspire. I am also a firm believer of teaming up with interdisciplinary experts to build systems of impact.Currently, I am a lecturer/assistant professor at University College Dublin.I completed my PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California, Davis. My PhD dissertation developed new knowledge and understanding of the problems on cost-efficient and energy-efficient telecommunication network planning and traffic engineering. Over 12 years of research in Telecommunications have helped me in developing and honing my skills on network optimisation, graph theory, linear algebra, signal processing, system modelling, machine learning, data analysis, and algorithms. In addition to that, I possess the following transferable skills:► Good knowledge of the telecommunication industry and a follower of emerging technology trends in the same, as manifested through publications of highly-cited publications and best-paper awards.► Strong leadership skills as evidenced by driving collaborations with reputed research groups in optical networking that resulted in over 55 publications in renowned journals and conferences.► Very strong skills in translating real-world problems into analytical models and solving the same as evident through contributions in different areas of information technology spanning from optical networks, IoT, 5G, and Data Analytics.► Ability to identify commercially impactful technologies through combined experiences of working in industrial research labs, academic research labs, and patent law firms.► Ability to work in a global collaborative team environment. If you want to learn more about me please feel free to connect with me! Lecturer/Assistant ProfessorUniversity College Dublin Aug 2017 - Jul 2023County Dublin, Ireland-Module coordinator for stage four undergraduate courses: Digital Communication and Advanced Wireless Communication.-Module coordinator for stage three undergraduate course: Microcontrollers. -
Chief Technology Advisor (Consulting)Motojeannie Inc May 2021 - Dec 2021 -
Research AssociateConnect Centre Mar 2013 - Jul 2017Dublin, Ireland- Built models to use hardware-level virtualisation at the optical nodes to save capital expenditure.- Developed frameworks using machine learning and linear programming concepts to optimally gather and analyse data in the internet of things (IoT) network architectures to minimise latency and power consumption.- Involved in successfully building a LTE network testbed to support cross-layer optimisation of the LTE protocol stack to stream high-definition YouTube videos.- Developed Python scripts to automatically run experiments, analyse the data, and extract key performance parameters and correlate them with video quality of experience in an LTE network testbed. - Developed an optimisation framework to reduce backup resources in the access network by more than 80% while providing full resilience against a complete switching node failure.- Implemented network planning algorithms to protect a complete backbone node failure with 35% less resource requirement in the service provider's network. -
Assistant Visiting ResearcherUc Davis Oct 2012 - Feb 2013Davis- Developed a strategic roadmap to guide service providers, industry practitioners, and local entrepreneurs on the selection, deployment, and operation of suitable telecommunication networks to address the digital divide between urban and rural/remote areas in emerging economies. The details appear in IEEE Communication Magazine's June 2016 Issue. -
Patent EngineerPark, Vaughan & Fleming Llp Apr 2012 - Oct 2012Davis, CaliforniaDrafting of patent applications related to computer science and electrical engineering inventions. Analysis of patents. Drafted patent applications for technical companies like VMWare, PARC, and Brocade.

Research AssistantUc Davis Sep 2007 - Apr 2012-Design of a heterogeneous optical network with mixed line rates and multiple modulation formats.Circuit provisioning and solving the routing, wavelength, and rate- assignment (RWRA) problem insuch networks. We showed that mixed-line-rate networks are more ecient in terms of CAPEX andenergy consumption.-Studied the effect of regenerator placement, power management, channel spacing and wavebandingin mixed-line-rate optical networks. -
InternNec Laboratories America Jun 2010 - Nov 2011-Energy efficient placement of data centres over a backbone network infrastructure and virtual topology design of inter-data centre networks with mixed line rates. We showed that placing the data centres optimally could lead to reduced overall energy consumption in the network.-Optical network planning and network engineering with multiple line rates (10/40/100 Gbps): studiedthe effect nonlinear physical impairments and heterogeneous dispersion maps in CapEx optimisationof multi-line-rate optical networks. Also studied disruptive vs. non-disruptive upgrade strategies fora mixed-line-rate network in terms of cost and energy optimisation.-Network planning of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) based elastic opticalnetworks and investigate the energy-efficiency of such networks. Our studies showed that energyconsumption of a network with OFDM-based transponders can be significantly reduced compared toa network with single-carrier transponders of identical bandwidths.
