We can genetically engineer a kombucha SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast) to produce psilocybin while it ferments. We can do this by printing genes from magic mushrooms and embedding them into the SCOBY’s DNA. Implementing a bacterial cleavage assay for engineered CRISPR-associated proteins in E. coli.Developing a tripartite selection system for engineered CRISPR-associated proteins in S. cerevisiae. Evolving a thermostable strain of E. coli to engineer enhanced stability in CRISPR-associated proteins for use in human cells.

Researching & developing Smarticles technology at GeneWEAVE Biosciences, a Division of ​Roche Molecular Systems, Inc. to quickly and reliably test for antibiotic resistance and susceptibility in clinically-relevant pathogens.

Worked on three different projects in the Coleman-Derr lab studying the plant microbiome1. Effects of planting density on the plant microbiome2. Effects of till/no-till and cover crop/no cover crop on the plant microbiome3. EPICON project studying epigenetic controls in sorghum to learn how it tolerates drought stress. I worked closely with the Principal Investigator as well as several graduate students. This provided an excellent opportunity for mentorship and independent work.
