I co-founded and lead engageSPARK, a tech social enterprise that helps humanitarian organizations and academic researchers survey and message hard-to-reach populations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), typically participants who do not have internet access but have basic mobile phones (non-smartphones).Organizations use our self-service web platform to educate, survey, inform, and incentivize their beneficiaries, participants, and staff via texts (SMS), calls (IVR & CATI), WhatsApp, and airtime top-ups in 185+ countries. For instance, they communicate critical Covid-19 health information to Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh; send crisis communications and surveys to internally displaced Ukrainians and refugees; collect essential public health data from citizens in Colombia; and encourage at-risk youth to get tested for HIV in Kenya. Our clients are international development organizations, research universities, UN agencies, and social enterprises globally, including Johns Hopkins, Harvard, Catholic Relief Services, World Vision, 60 Decibels, IOM, and UNICEF.---I previously led engageSPARK’s operations for six years, which included overseeing everything from product development, partnerships, and customer service to HR, finance, and admin—and lots of other things in between.Before engageSPARK, I practiced law, first as a corporate litigator, then as a human rights lawyer. I led one of the largest and first insurance cases to come out of the 2008 credit crisis and then spent several years in Uganda fighting for the rights of vulnerable and marginalized individuals. While in Uganda, I co-founded the anti-corruption organization, Not In My Country, and then co-founded engageSPARK.
