Trait Portfolio Manager, Global R&D

Watsonville, Ca, Us

In this role, I coordinated multiple programs for the R&D Win with Flavor Initiative. I established and lead the Global Trait Strategy initiative across crops for business-prioritized breeding traits. I continued to manage the Marker-Assisted Selection projects across research disciplines and crops. I supported the Flavor Center projects to enable consumer and flavor-focused breeding. And I directed external vendors to achieve our annual business goals

Scientist, Next Gen Breeding

Watsonville, Ca, Us

Molecular genetics is part of the Next Generation Breeding team at Driscoll's. We used MAS technologies to advance the application of molecular breeding in diploid and polyploid berries. Our work supported traditional plant breeding efforts to optimize resources and select desirable traits including more flavorful berries that require less agronomic resources. I led a research associate in marker discovery and development projects. I coordinated interdepartmental projects including experimental design, sampling, phenotypic data collection, next-generation sequencing, and trait associations analysis to validate and deploy trait-linked markers. Molecular markers are critical to optimize a breeding program's efforts to enrich specific traits.

Global R&D Extension & Communication Specialist

Watsonville, Ca, Us

Driscoll's Global R&D Extension Communication team works to share novel R&D knowledge through internal research departments and business units by connecting networks in person, and through documentation.I was the liaison between breeding and applied research scientists. I connected valuable knowledge with global research partners through the management of scientific documents, including production guides, best management practices, standard operating procedures, and crop manuals. In addition, I focused on curating and systematizing new processes to improve the accuracy and accessibility of extension guides; such as facilitating the development of knowledge-sharing platforms including web-based and cloud-sharing applications. As the publication editor, I managed a small team of technical writers for content editing, and the internal peer review and publication process for annual research reports.

Writing and editing focused on plant science, conservation, restoration, agriculture, and ecology.I draft literature reviews and reports on various topics including conservation, food science, biotechnology, genetics, and biology. I also edit proposals, manuscripts, manuals, reports, scientific articles, company newsletters, dissertations, theses, personal statements, and resumes.

Sep 2014 - Present

Laboratory & Cellar Manager

Hallcrest is a small, family-owned winery that specializes in local AVAs (Santa Cruz Mountains and Santa Lucia Highlands) Pinot Noirs. Organic Wineworks is the sister brand, which was the first certified organic (CCOF) winery in California, and all wines are produced organically and distributed nationally. I managed the laboratory: Inoculated juice with various yeast, and tracked proper fermentation using brix, pH, temperature, volatile acidity, and free sulfur dioxide content for all wine, and cider production.I was also responsible for managing customer accounts through engagement, and new product sample deliveries.

Sep 2015 - May 2016

Winemaker Assistant

I supported the wine production and formulation of specialty hard apple ciders. I researched and implemented current practices in organic wine-making, and crushed fresh fruit through processing: fermentation, barrel-aging, and bottled final product.

Sep 2015 - May 2016

Molecular Biologist And Extensionist

Gainesville, Florida, Us

The Honey Bee Research and Extension Lab focuses on improving the understanding of honey bees, native pollinators, and the communities they both support. The group uses basic and applied research and communicates the findings using extension efforts. I genotyped pollinators (bee and wasp species) in Florida for the presence of several major pathogens (Bacteria, fungi, and viruses). I resolved the impact of several commercial pesticides on important genes expression in developing honey bee larvae and adults using q-RT-PCR. I also managed and taught research technicians through collaborative experiments.

Oct 2014 - Sep 2015

Molecular Biology Consultant

Gainesville, Florida, Us

Directed extension workshop for viral diagnostic techniques in bee research. Advised scientists on molecular diagnostic techniques at the Caribbean Bee College.

May 2015 - May 2015

Biochemistry Graduate Research Fellow (Nih)

Pullman/Spokane/Tri-Cities/Vancouver/Everett/Global, Washington, Us

The LCME group researches the biosynthetic pathways that produce novel and important plant-specialized metabolites in aromatic plants to uncover the mechanisms responsible for the evolution of these pathways in the plant kingdom. We also worked to understand the function of natural products using the biology and physiology of a given plant species. I developed transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic methods for strawberry fruit varieties across developmental stages. I analyzed phytochemicals in strawberries using chemical profiling UPLC-MS-MS and GC-MS. I classified wine grape compounds through proteomic and chemical analysis UPLC-MS, and MALDI-TOF-MS. I also managed and mentored research technicians.

Sep 2012 - Aug 2014

Molecular Plant Science - Graduate Researcher

Pullman/Spokane/Tri-Cities/Vancouver/Everett/Global, Washington, Us

Molecular Plant Science Program Graduate Rotations and Responsibilities:1. Sanja Roje: Riboflavin biosynthesis, S. merloti; Protein purification, activity quantification2. Markus Lange: Taxol biosynthetic pathway; Protein elucidation and characterization3. David Gang: Flavonoid accumulation in wine grapes; MALDI-TOF-MS, IMS Methods

Aug 2012 - May 2013

Genetics Research Fellow (Hhmi)

Gainesville, Florida, Us

The Floriculture Biotechnology lab focuses on using biotechnology and genetics to improve the horticultural performance of floriculture crops. The lab serves as a bridge between basic molecular biology and applied horticulture. Research is focused in the areas of functional genomics (ESTs), gene expression, genetic transformation, plant breeding and plant physiology with the ultimate goal of producing better floriculture crops through biotechnology. As a research assistant of Dave Clark, and Thomas Colquhoun, I used Petunia x hybrida as a model system to implement floral fragrance biotechnology. We resolved the genetic ‘switch’ that promotes floral buds to open into flowersUsing gene regulation research within the Floral Volatile Pathway, we determined key chemicals in the floral aroma bouquet, which can be applied across flowering species to improve pollinationI managed and trained research assistants, and I wrote, reviewed, and completed data analysis for manuscripts.

Sep 2008 - Dec 2011

Visiting Researcher (Nsf)

Ithaca, Ny, Us

Tomato, Solanum lycopersicum has been the subject of many studies focused on the development and ripening process of climacteric fruits; studies focus on pigmentation, texture, aroma, flavor, and nutrient composition (Moore et al., 2002). To study fruit ripening, it is necessary to use ripening mutants. As an NSF-funded plant researcher, I designed functional fruit-specific ripening control promoter constructs (RIN, NOR genes) using genetic modification, aimed to regulate fruit ripening in tomatoes.
