Petroleum Impacted Sites, Western United StatesCurrently I am a field manager and project coordinator for several retail and bulk fuel facilities in the Western United States. I plan and conduct remedial investigations/feasibility studies and remediation of soil and groundwater contamination at petroleum-impacted sites. I manage field efforts for soil, vapor, and groundwater sampling, large remedial excavations, and monitoring well installation. I also write reports, cost proposals, conduct historical land use research, and perform hydrogeologic analysis. I identify data gaps and prepare work plans for underground storage tank (UST) removals and petroleum remediation, including sites enrolled in the Voluntary Cleanup Program or under Agreed Order. I have also installed and maintained remediation systems.

Geotechnical and Environmental Services, Puget Sound, WAAs Hart Crowser’s GIS lead, I created numerous GIS-based maps for environmental and geotechnical projects using my extensive geologic field experience in urban, remote, and rural sites. By using a database and GIS-based approach to site reconnaissance and data collection, I mapped and collected data used to create multiple geologic maps. I performed multiple critical area compliance reviews for city and county building departments. This included evaluating geologic and geotechnical reports, mitigation plans, and whether the proposed development satisfied the City’s development code. I’ve conducted site visits and met with City staff to work collaboratively on paths forward for development proposals. Additionally, I prepared reports detailing findings and providing recommendations for the City and County building departments.OSMRE’s Abandoned Mine Land Program, Western United States For the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement (OSMRE) I performed geotechnical and GIS-based field work on nine coal mine emergency sites involving open shafts, mine facilities, and unstable slopes. I conducted historic investigations of mining activity using field reconnaissance and historical GIS mapping and remote sensing. I developed final plans, specifications, and construction cost estimates and monitored construction, then prepared the final construction reports for subsidence/shaft coal mine features. Projects required flexibility to adapt design and construction methods in the field to changing conditions observed after excavations began, resulting in lower construction costs for OSMRE.

Everett Smelter-Uplands Residential Arsenic Cleanup, Everett, WAAs field/task manager on the Washington State Department of Ecology project, I scoped, priced, planned, and conducted site mapping, utility locating, and geoprobe soil sampling of more than a hundred residential and commercial properties to determine the extent and depth of smelter related metals contamination. My team and I conducted X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) analysis of soil samples, collected GPS data and compiled reports for Ecology, and developed and trained staff, all under tight schedules. I also conducted construction oversight related to this very large environmental remediation project.Green River and Lower Duwamish Waterway Superfund Site, Seattle, WAI conducted GIS investigations and prepared reports on all aspects of the highly complex Lower Duwamish Waterway site for Ecology. I successfully compiled GIS spatial data from highly varied sources and created a master atlas of over 4,000 figures to describe the current stormwater networks and facilities.Port Gamble Former Mill Site, Port Gamble WAAs task and field manager, I planned, scoped, developed pricing, designed, conducted GIS investigations, Geoprobe sampled, and reported on all aspects of the site for Ecology. This site was impacted by dioxin from wood waste, and I successfully designed a sampling plan to best meet Ecology’s needs.Stormwater Monitoring Study, North Boeing Field, Seattle, WAAs lead GIS analyst, I provided technical support to develop a GIS database for the North Boeing Field drainage system for Ecology. This included compiling existing information on the stormwater drainage structure and geo-locating historical sampling that had occurred on the North Boeing Field property. I also provided field support to install pump sampling stations on North Boeing Field stormwater lines, and conducted sampling periodically during heavy rain events.

As a geologist and GIS specialist at GeoMapNW for 5 years, I supported over 15 geologic mapping projects, including several for USGS publication. I created and managed topology, modified and manipulated multiple data models (vector, raster, TIN) in a variety of formats; maintained and obtained GIS base data from multiple sources, maintained “mission critical” GIS databases and spatial information, and queried spatial information in both spatial and database environments. I edited GIS data and maps for publication, map databases, and mapping products under long- and short-term deadlines. I designed, developed, tested and deployed desktop and Web-based geospatial solutions. I also conducted field geology mapping and investigations in support of mapping efforts.

While employed with DNR, I coordinated state-wide aquatic data GIS production, interpretation, and analysis. I tracked and monitored changes in intertidal zones, species, and habitats, throughout Washington State. I performed professional cartography work using conventional and computerized methods. I supervised other cartographers and technicians. I maintained spatial data from varied sources and produced materials for hearings, informational, and other professional needs. I developed map layouts and design and created digital layers from paper, GPS, and electronic sources. I conducted quality assurance on all types of data. My field work included GPS design and collection, field mapping, data analysis, data interpretation, data modeling, statistical analysis, and study design.

At ECU I taught two semesters of earth science curriculum at East Carolina University, including physical geology and “Concepts of Earth and Natural Sciences” to education majors. Both of these courses were entirely designed and taught by myself, and I received positive feedback from student and peer observers. I also developed GIS and geology modules for K-12 teachers of earth sciences. These modules covered the basics of geography and geology to intermediate level ArcView GIS. Subsequently I then helped schools setup computer hardware/software for instructors to use in class instruction, and provided classroom assistance to educators, when needed. I was in charge of setting up the network hardware and software for a new technology system for educators, as well as the design and building of HTML content and web design. At the peak, I supported over 7,000 users on the system, including terminal services and email.

As a GIS Consultant, I collected geological data to help assess the effects of habitat loss and alteration on salmon and steelhead production in Western Washington watersheds. I mapped fish habitat conditions with ArcView GIS and digitized and manipulated data in ArcView and ArcInfo. In addition, I interpreted maps and aerial photos, and translated diverse sources of information from written to spatial format.
