At KJIC, I consulted on project management and project controls for $35Mil of troubled construction projects that were not progressing according to plan. Low invoicing was low, low manpower, an unhappy client, and regulatory issues with various government agencies arose due to unpaid salaries. I led the effort to create and standardize monthly project reports that provided accurate counts of man hours, productivity, and costs (actual/committed/forecast/budgeted). We were able to improve the projects’ Quality Control through best-practices that minimized re-work. I subcontracted work to relieve manpower shortfall, grew fabrication production to compensate for delays, and recovered $4Mil for the client through contract review of payables.

As a Consultant to Project Manager for the expansion of a $80Mil chemical plant, I mentored schedulers and other client employees to help streamline the project process and integrate their multiple schedules. I corrected the project’s existing work breakdown structure (WBS) and created a project execution plan to coordinate scheduling, progress measurement and change management. The result was a reduction in the reporting period from ten to three days, thanks to a restructured scheduling process, the integrated schedules, and automated updating.

At Jacobs I worked on two projects. On the first, troubled project, a client’s lack of confidence led them to request the entire project controls team be replaced. I was brought in to assess the people, processes, technology, organization, data, and performance management maturity model to see what could be rescued. I identified root causes and determined the problem was not the amount of the team’s effort but rather unstructured, complex manual procedures and inexperience with a streamlined environment. I was able to introduce a project governance model with repeatable, predictable processes, and created and automated cost and schedule KPI. I coached the junior project control staff on project management and control industry best practices. Client dissatisfaction turned around in 3 months, allowing Jacobs to retain the original project control resources.On the second, I created a Project Controls Department to support their $1Bil Nova Chemical Expansion Project. In this role, I hired, managed and mentored three cost and scheduling professionals who performed the project’s risk management, analysis, change management, cost control and CPN Primavera schedules. We oversaw the contractors’ schedules, reporting monthly to company management. I also implemented project/client-specific Project Controls procedures, processes and guidelines, and developed cost breakdown methodology for complex contractor progress. More streamlined (and more detailed) contractor invoicing shortened the checking and approval process by four days each month. We saved $600k by hiring combining the Quantity Surveyor and Estimator roles into one position.

Imperial Oil gave me the opportunity to lead a multinational (CA, USA, South Korea) Project Controls effort of nine engineering, procurement, fabrication and construction firms for a four-year project, a $5Bil segment of the Kearl Project. Our team aligned construction, fabrication and engineering groups to produce an overall project plan. I managed a team of six senior professionals and coordinated with leads from engineering, construction, and sub-contractors, and coordinated, streamlined, and standardized reporting from ten engineering, fabrication and construction contractors in multiple countries. We saved 500 manhours per month for any average of $40,000, and reduced report generation time from two weeks to two days, increasing accuracy and timeliness of management reports.

I directed the overall planning and scheduling of a $5Bil Long Lake Upgrader project with a team of ten schedulers, developing project scheduling, forecasting, and progress monitoring execution plans and procedures in conjunction with the company-wide integration of Primavera software. I composed key project controls policies/procedures and ensured their uniform application. Ten schedulers were trained to use the Primavera P5 scheduling software to produce engineering, construction, and commissioning schedules. I directed project scheduling procedures and plans for resource requirements and time line for project completion, as well.

Hired as the Scheduling Lead for the $8Bil Syncrude UE-1 Oil Sands upgrade project, I was promoted to Project Controls Lead position managing a $400Mil related project. The position involved managing the overall project controls systems, and establishing strong rapport with client and management through regular briefings. I developed the project control plans for the project’s execution, procedures and Work Breakdown Structures (WBS), as well as coaching the Project Control Specialists on productivity, reporting, and quality of deliverables.
