Student Research - Sustainable Development

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

The GIG research trip to Mumbai, which highlighted the complex interactions between social, economic, and environmental variables has expanded my understanding of sustainability issues. Seeing people working towards ideas that might have a big impact on the city's future and learning how we could do the same in Melbourne and around the world was inspiring. Our research on sustainability issues such as overpopulation, waste management and energy disparity brought together some real world applications to much of the problems that would be addressed with engineering. This culminated in our group project which also showcased the power of collaboration among a diverse multidisciplinary group, who despite attending the same lectures and site visits, each absorbed different insights. Discussions about observed issues allowed us to draw meaningful connections and reframe the problem (“Overpopulation from urbanisation can contribute to lower living standards, however there is more of a correlation with resource management and living conditions”). The insights I drew from my first-hand experiences around Mumbai and reading budget reports and population data allowed me to greater inform my understanding and realise the role of differing levels of stakeholders in solving these problems.
