Abstract:The present work studies challenges in air pollution modeling focusing on transport, model evaluation, and human health.In regard to transport, certain desirable properties of transport schemes have been defined in the literature and new transport schemes aiming at fulfilling these properties are suggested here. In particular semi-Lagrangian transport schemes combine properties from fully Eulerian and fully Lagrangian methods. The Hybrid Eulerian Lagrangian (HEL) scheme fulfills all of the desirable properties also when considering chemistry and the nonlinearities therein and coupled to a dynamic model. When comparing a collection of state-of-the-art schemes, using a newly developed test case suite, it is seen that though HEL does not outperform all schemes in the given setup, it is the only scheme which neither overshoots nor generates range-preserving unmixing/unphysical mixing.Model evaluation studies are important to assess the current state-of-the-art within air pollution modeling and to establish which areas should be focus areas for future research. In the Air Quality Model Evaluation International Initiative (AQMEII) more than 10 models were tested and compared to assess performance with respect to meteorological input, O3, and PM. It was found that the models perform well, especially as an ensemble, but further work on improving the meteorological input and solving mass closure is needed.To estimate the health-related external costs from air pollution associated with different emissions the Economic Valuation of Air pollution (EVA) system has been developed and applied. The external costs for society from certain emission sectors are estimated in the present work and it is seen that agriculture, domestic heating based on wood burning, road traffic, and ship traffic are some of the largest contributors to the Danish society’s external costs of air pollution related to human health.
