Bill Vetterling (Numerical Recipes in C) was working there and I wanted to learn more about numerical approaches to science. Working with Bill and Steve Telfer I contributed, mostly through material characterization, to a couple of new digital imaging projects code-named Opal and Onyx.Based on thin film work at Polaroid I created a numerical approach to describing crystallization that solved some persistent problems with closed form crystallization equations. In particular, systems with dimensional limitations (e.g., thin films) were difficult to predict with classic crystallization descriptions.I gained experience working with a range of material characterization tools focused on microscopy (optical, electron, AFM, hot-cold stage), but also including high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC).
