Research AssistantBoston University Jun 2014 - Jun 2018Greater Boston AreaMy research focuses on finding the set of circumstances that allow cells and tissues to maintain consistent levels of mechanical force in their native environment. When cells and tissues lose this ability, it leads to diseases such as cancer and atherosclerosis, and therefore understanding how cells maintain these forces is crucial to understanding the development and progression of those diseases. My work looks at the outside circumstances that either enhance or inhibit this ability. Cellular forces are measured using a microfabricated stamp coated with fluorescent proteins. These proteins are transfered to a hydrogel and force is measured by imaging the gel seeded with adherent with cells. The images are then run through a custom Matlab code with tracks deformation of the original pattern and calculates force based on gel properties. -
