Profile bio

About Bronte Alexander

I am a political geographer and critical migration studies scholar. I investigate mobilities, spatialities, (forced) migration, bordering, military-humanitarianism, and settlement experiences.I'm currently based at the Collegium Helveticum, Zurich, where I am working as an Early Career Fellow. My project examines the everyday mobilities and spatialities of LGBTIQ+ people who were born overseas. I draw on counter-mapping methodologies to investigate spaces of safety and belonging and/or risk and exclusion in metropolitan and rural cities.More generally, I am interested in systems of governance that shape migrant mobilities, including borderwork and securitisation practices within humanitarian contexts. In my PhD, I examined the involvement of the military in Brazil's humanitarian response to Venezuelan migration. I studied spaces of care that operate as sites of control and confinement, and am currently working on my monograph with Bristol University Press. I have taught first and second year human security classes. These include: 'Approaches to Human Security' and 'Structures of (In)security', both of which had over 100 students across two Griffith campuses in South East Queensland.
