About Carter Allen
My driving passion is building for and with biology. I am interested in the integration of robotic automation with the research of Biology. I graduated UCLA with a B.S. in BioPhysics. I have experience designing, assembling and testing liquid-handling robots. From Hydroponics to Medical devices and bacterial bioreactors, I have worked on projects that enable the exploration and development of biological processes. I am as comfortable in a machine shop (or a blacksmith's)as I am with a pipette in hand at a lab bench. I believe there exists enormous potential in engineered biology and diagnostics to improve our world across industries and cultural boundaries.

Laboratory Automation Engineer
Implementation and support of automated laboratory solutions into CLIA/CAP/ISO certified workflows.-Develop and Perform risk analysis, gather user requirements, and assist in the design transfer process for automated solutions in a clinical laboratory- Develop and Perform IQ/OQ/PQ on liquid handler platforms (mostly Biomeks) and other automated solutions.- Assisted in Design and development of both product and process of assembly for an in-house Liquid Handling platform-Electrical and mechanical troubleshooting of malfunctioning liquid handlers, from replacing parts to debugging serial connection failure.-CAD and manufacturing of support solutions (i.e. electromechanical troubleshooting tools and calibration devices)-Reconfigured wiring of prototypes for ease of assembly and increased Quality Assurance -Assisted in programming troubleshooting tools with Python, making use of Git and Command Line
Lab Automation Designer/Technician
Designed, Fabricated and Assembled a robotic system to take pictures of fly larvae at various points in their development.-Designed with Solidworks 2017-Programmed with Python (See Github Repo) using a Raspberry PiGithub: https://github.com/b-carter-allen/StageMaster2000Materials: Lasercut Acrylic, Aluminum Extrusions, 3d-Printed PLA, Pi Camera, GT2 Timing Pulleys and Belt, Raspberry Pi 3B+, Adafruit MotorHAT
Rockwall Staff
I supervised the UCLA Rockwall, encouraging the safety and wellbeing of all UCLA climbers.
Technical Designer
Developing an aeroponics system among other sustainability projects using the integration of technology and sensors to grow not only food, but a community of environmental consciousness.- Bottom-Up CAD Design using SolidWorks of 8'x10' Aeroponics vertical wall.- PCB Design of WiFi enabled control module with integrated Atmospheric Humidity/Temperature, pH, and fluid level sensors.- Manually machined structural components to be professionally welded.
Mechatronic Engineering Intern
Built and refined a prototype laboratory automation device with pipetting, centrifuge, and temperature control capabilities to perform bacterial detection assays on biohazardous materials.-Used Solidworks and Autocad to update preexisting assembly files with improved modules.-Designed and laser cut electronic mounting boards for new components.-Used shop machinery such as Lathe, Bandsaw, and Milling machines to prototype various design iterations.-Soldered and/or Wired electronic components; Motor control boards, Temperature control boards, DC power relays, and Arduino.-Ran Quality Control tests of both the software and hardware components of this medical device.Designed and Assembled a working prototype with atmospheric humidity and Temperature control to prevent dehydration of biological binding agents.-Designed the incubation chamber using Solidworks-Established atmospheric humidity and temperature control by programming an Arduino UNO connected to sensors, heating elements and humidifying elements running a PID-based protocol.Researched and Developed a more efficient production method with reduced hands-on time for isolating biohazard samples on an electrochemical sensor chip.-Previous method of isolation was using an adhesive film which required hands-on time.-I Assembled a 3D-printer and programmed it to lay down PLA filament isolating samples on a chip, thereby creating a method with reduced hands-on time-Ran Quality Control Assays which ensured filament isolation produced similar results to green-film isolation, proving the filament isolation method was a viable alternative.
Bioengineer
Helped to research and develop production methods for the microbacterium Spirulina, for use in a biologically active beverage.- Managed supply chain of chemical reagents and agricultural technology for Virginia based biotech beverage startup. Assisted in the creation of a production facility for the spirulina microalgae in our beverages:- Established sterile growth environment for the bioreactor, ran daily QC assays to ensure proper pH and nutrient concentrations
