At the Andersen Lab, I analyzed and presented Genetics and Epidemiological data regarding COVID-19 & software development of a new python package on outbreak.info. This was a summer internship; therefore I worked with a team of other interns which helped facilitate learning among us. Specifically, I helped translate many of the packages' core functionalities from R to python. I developed functions that would send requests and parse the data from the outbreak.info API. I also created a function to solve a one-to-many query issue resulting from naming issues across geographical locations using their uniquely identifiable codes. Along the way, I also created unit tests to future-proof the functionality.At the end of the internship, I communicated the results at a poster presentation with my co-interns at Scripps.

This experience was split between two different schools. At each school, I taught for a total of 3 months as a paid tutor.At King Chavez, I was working with 4th graders as a Math & English tutor. I helped grade classwork and create new materials. As I am a native Spanish speaker & many students at this school were bilingual, I was asked to help guide ELA (English Language Arts) for those kids. Given my background in STEM, this was a really great experience that helped me understand how younger kids learn to love math and gave me a new perspective on teaching. Furthermore, as someone with a Latin American background, it also helped me understand the cultural intersection and how to scaffold learning with language.At the CVLCC, I was assigned to a 5th-grade Math class. Given COVID regulations, the classrooms were split to have the teachers move rooms and to avoid students from having to cross paths. This meant that I was working with two sets of students. My host teacher initially wanted me to collect and analyze resources that would help understand the students aptitude of math, however, during the first week, we noticed many of the students were displaying antisocial behaviors that was limiting them from learning. We noticed bullying in both classes and so we decided I would create resources and instruct the students on the negative effects of bullying through the use of social-emotional learning practices.
