About Barbara Marcolini

I am an investigative journalist specialized in Open Source and Visual Journalism. I was a founding member of the Visual Investigations team at The New York Times, having won five Documentary & News Emmys. Our team was a pioneer in combining traditional reporting with advanced digital forensics, such as collecting and parsing information from large volumes of videos, photos and audio, analysis of satellite imagery and 3D reconstructions. Currently, I bring the same experience and knowledge to Amnesty International as a Visual Investigator. My role is designed to not only apply Open Source techniques to investigations of human rights violations, but also to craft their visual presentation. I am in charge of identifying opportunities for visual stories, working with other researchers to refine their work, writing scripts, hiring motion graphics and video editors, directors of photography and other professionals we may need and overseeing the production of pieces from inception to publication. I am also a university professor and workshop facilitator, teaching journalism students and media professionals how to develop Open Source investigations and visual stories.
