I like to joke that I learned how to clean a toilet before I learned how to tie my shoes, but it’s not entirely a joke. I grew up in a tourist town right next to Yellowstone National Park. The Park hosts 3 million visitors from all over the world in the span of 6 months. My parents own a motel, which my grandparents and great-grandparents built. My work experience started when I was very little. I spent every summer morning from the time I could walk to the time I left for college cleaning motel rooms and while this doesn’t sound like a desirable job (because it’s not), I learned to work hard and enjoy working. My parents bought a gas station at a point in their lives when they didn’t have a lot of money, so they spent the early years running it by themselves with the help of their children. It was during this time in my life that I learned how to manage my time. I started the day at the motel but needed to fit in my shift at the gas station, track practice, and as I got older, a third job as a waitress in the evening. At the time, I didn’t see my childhood as being unique. I thought it was “normal” for an 8-year-old kid to spend every day of the summer working, and even though I learned that this was not “normal,” I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. My childhood taught me from a young age to enjoy and find happiness in work. Through my work experience as a housekeeper, cashier, inventory manager, busser, and waitress, I have learned skills such as time management, communication, detail-orientation, multitasking, teamwork, discipline, and entrepreneurship.I got a degree in Finance from the Huntsman School of Business at Utah State, while at the same time earning academic accolades as a student-athlete. My passion for running helped pay for school and allowed me to strengthen the skills I developed in all my years of work such as time management, communication, and discipline. I worked in real estates as an Asset Manager at Oz Impact Funds for 1.5 years, but have since moved back to West Yellowstone where I have taken a more active role as director of operations over the hotel and gas station.To this day I am grateful my parents taught me how to work.
