Clinical Nurse II on a 32 bed unit specializing in the post-operative care of patients after heart transplants, lung transplants, cardiac valve replacements and repairs (including thoracic endovascular aortic repairs and transcatheter aortic valve replacements), lobectomies, pneumonectomies, Cox-Maze procedures, ventriculostomies, pulmonary endarterectomies, aortic aneurysm repairs and management of patients with left, right and biventricular assist devices (Heartmate II, Heartmate III, Heartware, Rotaflow), intra-aortic balloon pumps (femoral, axillary) & extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA & VV).Responsibilities included: - Management of invasive hemodynamic monitoring (arterial lines, pulmonary artery catheters, central venous pressures), ventilator support, epicardial and transvenous pacemakers & continuous renal replacement as well as medication administration including vasoactive drip titration and conscious sedation necessary for procedures, patient assessment, lab collection and interpretation- Participated in daily interdisciplinary rounds with the intensive care team and coordinated patient care with consulting specialties Completed Duke's Nurse Residency Program with presentation of a literature review ("The Use of Dexmedetomidine (Precedex) in Post-Surgical Cardiothoracic Patient Population") relevant to current unit practiceAdditional Responsibilities:- Chosen to precept nursing students and new hire nurses, providing comprehensive teaching about all aspects of cardiothoracic surgery nursing while ensuring patient safety and cosigning appropriate documentation- Member of CTICU's Performance Improvement Committee, used evidence based practice to better patient outcomes, performed weekly audits targeted at reducing catheter related bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) and catheter related urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) through chart review and patient assessment
