I manage the Keck Ecological and Evolutionary Genetics Sequencing Center where I specialize in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and Sanger sequencing of DNA on Illumina and other platforms. I am responsible for managing multiple projects at a time, liaising with scientists and students from across the world, participation in field collections, DNA extractions, performing PCR and qPCR, developing novel methods for microbiome studies, building amplicon and metagenomic sequencing libraries, and operating and maintaining multiple sequencing instruments. My role involves training new employees, providing facility tours, managing supply ordering, processing .fastq and .ab1 files, and ensuring adherence to lab safety. I also participate on career panels and assist with making annual safety training videos.

At the museum, I studied leatherback sea turtle fossils and produced two scientific publications with my mentor, Dr. Robert Boessenecker. During my studies, I was responsible for the collection, preparation, and academic study of marine vertebrate fossils from across the USA. I participated in field excursions, visited other museum collections, performed fossil matrix removal, practiced anatomical illustration, archival labelling and DSLR photography, and performed data analysis, figure preparation using the Adobe Suite, literature reviews, and manuscript preparation and publication. I also participated in public outreach for the museum.

During my time at Hollings, I examined the presence and abundance of microplastic in tropical marine sponge tissues collected from Bocas del Toro, Panamá. I was responsible for novel methods development, sample lyophilization, bleach digestion, vacuum filtration, fluorescence microscopy, data analysis, literature review, and manuscript preparation and publication.

This aim of my summer field work was to collect marine sponges to survey them for the presence of microplastic in their tissues and in the surrounding water. There, I collected sponge and water samples on free dive on reefs up to 35 feet. I also used fluorescence microscopy to identify and characterize microplastics, and performed underwater photography and videography to document sponge specimens. I presented my preliminary findings to students and scientists at the station. While at the station, I also assisted colleagues with brittle star collection, sponge larvae extraction, nutrient deployment in situ, building PVC pipe structures, filtering seawater, and maintaining live sponges in situ and in a wet lab.

As a outdoor adventure guide, I ensured the safety of participants on zipline, high ropes, climbing and kayaking tours while also providing interactive education on local flora and fauna. My duties included daily equipment checks and maintenance, trail and course maintenance, coordination and teamwork with other guides, and engaging participants as they conquered new heights.
