About Bailey Mclernon, Ph.D.

I completed my Ph.D. in 2023 in the Boston University Chemistry Department, working at the interface of organic and inorganic chemistry in the laboratory of Prof. John Caradonna. While in graduate school, I researched green catalysis and developed a novel series of oxidative manganese catalysts. I was also a teaching assistant for 22 terms at Boston University, developing skills in facilitation, inquiry-based teaching, and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds and abilities. My passions include sustainable chemistry, holistic education, and taking long walks in green pastures by still waters.

I taught an introductory course on Integrated Chemistry and Biology. Each week, I teach a combined discussion + laboratory that covers topics from electronegativity and chemical bonding, to cell signaling and polymerase chain reactions (PCR). Students not only gain a strong foundation of life science principles and laboratory techniques, they each exhibit growth in asking questions, recognizing patterns, and cultivating a dynamic space in which everyone is genuinely curious.
  • Boston University
    Graduate Teaching Fellow
    Boston University Sep 2016 - May 2022
    Boston, Massachusetts, United States
I was a Teaching Fellow in General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry courses for 22 terms during my graduate career. I developed worksheets and led discussion sections for both General and Organic Chemistry, guiding students towards a deeper understanding of the material and providing a safe space for students to ask any and all questions. In the Organic Chemistry labs that I taught, students learned the importance of concept application, technique mastery, and fun (while staying safe!) in the lab.
