Bailey Deacon initially joined the Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) team in November 2015 as the shelter’s first Director of Communications. In that role, she helped build BARCS’ reputation and community support by telling the rich and impactful stories of the everyday trials, tribulations and daily miracles of an underfunded and struggling open-admission shelter.Over the next few years, driven by her ambition to contribute to advancing the financial stability of the shelter, Bailey took a keen interest in using engaging and surprising stories to increase revenue through emergency fundraising appeals and seasonal campaigns. In 2019, Bailey assumed the role of Chief Philanthropy and Communications Officer, leading a talented hybrid department that oversees all fundraising campaigns, donor relations, grants, events, marketing, web management, social media, branding and design, media relations and community outreach.Bailey’s experience in animal welfare includes over a decade of work at both open-admission and private shelters. Prior to a life of service to Baltimore’s animals, Bailey worked in advertising and web design and voluntarily helped found a safehouse for homeless children in Cap Haitien, Haiti.Bailey believes that transparency in nonprofit work is the key to genuine and lasting support within any community. She also believes in letting your pets on the sofa, bed and countertops. In her free time, Bailey enjoys throwing dinner parties, sharing neighborly beers on her classic ol’ South Baltimore stoop and managing her chaotic menagerie of BARCS-curated pets.
