Graduate Student
I completed my doctoral degree in Biomedical Sciences through the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program (BSGP). The BSGP is based in The Ohio State University College of Medicine, with a focus on "The Biology of Human Disease." The curriculum encourages interdisciplinary studies, and promotes an appreciation for how the integration of basic and clinical science can lead to a better understanding of human health and disease.
Graduate Student Researcher
I moved with the lab of my PhD mentor to the Medical College of Wisconsin to complete my doctoral research, while still remaining a graduate student at The Ohio State University. My dissertation research topic was the role of a-smooth muscle actin (SMA) in Mitral Valve Prolapse. Whether SMA is contributing to the disease, or simply a frequently observed readout of a failing valve was evaluated through the use of mouse models, cellular studies and human tissue. With the completion of this project, I contributed knowledge toward the development of future therapeutics to treat this common disease, which can only at present be cured with surgical valve repair or replacement.
Graduate Student
As a graduate student in the laboratory of Dr. Joy Lincoln, I specialized in the study of heart valve development and disease. While this is a common condition affecting approximately 2.5% of the U.S. population, causes and mechanisms behind valve diseases are still poorly understood. In addition, surgical valve repair or replacement is the only effective treatment at this time, amounting to billions of dollars in healthcare costs each year. It is our belief that understanding the disease causes and processes will lead to new and better pharmacological therapeutics to prevent or halt disease progression in this patient population.
Contributing Writer
I served as a contributor to Pediatrics Nationwide, a blog dedicated to sharing knowledge and advancing the conversation on pediatric health, and PediatricsOnline, an e-newsletter for specialists.
Research Assistant
As an undergraduate I worked in the laboratory of Dr. Jeffrey S. Lehman, a plant pathologist whose lab is primarily focused on ecological/epidemiological interactions between plants and their pathogens. My study however, focused on the phenomenon of red maple toxicosis, a syndrome that occurs specifically in equines after the consumption of dried or wilted red maple leaves with a mortality rate of 60-65% within six days of ingestion. Little is known about the effects of other maple species on equines, and as such I sought to further the current knowledge of the syndrome in this area. The objective of this research was to evaluate the toxic effects of dried samples of red maple (Acer rubrum) leaves, as well as thirteen other maple species, on equine erythrocytes by quantifying the differences in toxicities across the different species. I successfully defended and presented this work as my undergraduate honor's thesis.
