Dr. Senthilkumar Balakrishnan, Ph.D., currently serves as a Scientific Officer in Biological Sciences at the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology in Chennai, India. With 24 years of comprehensive experience in teaching, research, and clinical diagnostics, he brings a wealth of expertise to his role. Previously, he held the position of Professor (Associate) of Medical Microbiology and was a Board of Studies Member for PhD & Post Graduate Medical Microbiology at Haramaya University in Ethiopia. He has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Renowned Professor's Award from Foreign Universities by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Additionally, he has also received travel grants facilitated by Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, India.He has contributed significantly to academia, having served as a Post Graduate Board of Studies Member and Expert Committee Member, facilitating course affiliations for colleges under Periyar University, Salem, India. Furthermore, he has served as a foreign external examiner, evaluating PhD theses for various universities, and has provided mentorship for Ph.D., MPhil, and Master's research students. His areas of expertise include host-parasite interaction, infectious diseases, molecular and microbial pathogenesis, antibiotic resistance, immunology, bioprospecting of antimicrobials, and bacterial metabolites.His research endeavors extend with 19 completed research grants, projects, and schemes to his credit at both the national and international levels. Notably, he has collaborated with Prof. Salvatore Massa from the Department of Food Microbiology at Foggia Agricultural University, Italy, on research titled "Plasmid Analysis and Gene Transfer in Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhi”. He is deeply interested in GBD (Global Burden of Disease) research, as the publications stemming from it play a pivotal role in informing policy-making decisions for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. By addressing some of the world's most pressing challenges, GBD research serves as a valuable tool in tackling complex issues and advancing global health agendas.He is a prolific author, with over 100 research articles published in peer-reviewed journals, including esteemed publications such as JAMA Oncology, Nature, and Lancet. Additionally, he has authored three books Immunology & Immunotechology; Practical Microbiology-A Laboratory Manual; Practical Immunology-A Laboratory Manual) and three book chapters.
