About Borja Balbastre Camarena
"BIM Coordinator at COWI with more than 5 years of hands-on experience in civil engineering, contributing to prestigious projects worldwide.Throughout my career, I have participated in high-profile projects such as Rail Baltica. During my time at Arenas & Asociados, I had the privilege of actively contributing to the design of viaducts, overpasses, underpasses, and ecoducts, including the iconic Neris Bridge in Lithuania. This experience provided me with invaluable insights into optimizing complex bridge structures, integrating BIM workflows, and collaborating effectively with diverse project teams. In addition to Rail Baltica, I have also made significant contributions to the E6 project in Norway while working at Acciona. Specifically, I was involved in parametrizing reinforcement for the tunnel portal structures. By implementing parametric design techniques, I streamlined the process, making it more efficient and resulting in time and cost savings, all while ensuring the highest standards of quality and safety. This effort was recognized with the Special Recognition BIM Tekla Award in 2022.These experiences have solidified my expertise in BIM, parametric design, and computational design, enabling me to create sustainable and efficient solutions that drive innovation in the civil engineering industry.Motivated by a deep passion for innovation and pursuit of personal development, I am eagerly embracing new challenges in the field of civil engineering. My current engagement in Femern tunnel project with COWI empowers me to push the limits of what can be accomplished and make a profound mark on the ever-evolving world of infrastructure. If you share the same passion for parametric design and computational design, I would love to connect and exchange ideas. Please feel free to reach out, share your experiences, or ask any questions!"

At Most Enginyers I was responsible for the following tasks:*Development of construction projects subjected to bidding processes*Conduction of special studies to optimise structural desings*Participation on the design of civil engineering projects
Structural Engineer
During my working period at Cub Estudi I carreid out the following duties:*Fulfilment of structural calculations and technical drawings applied to the building sector*Obtainment of measurements and budget of the project
Research Trainee
In that time, I developed a project at TYPSA in collaboration with the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (Sweden) which was called "Fatigue Analysis of Mooring Lines in Floating Bridges: Influence of Line Configuration and Water Depth in a Case Study in Bjørnafjorden".As the issue of floating bridges was really innovative for me, I had to read a bunch of scientific articles, papers and books in order to have a better understanding of it. Furthermore, I established contact with some international experts in this field who helped me in some aspects of the work. In this sense, I learned to solve problems by myself, working independently. Moreover, I had meetings with my supervisors every week with clearly defined aims. The regularity of these meetings and their follow-up ensured a good job; however, at the beginning, the pressure did threaten to be overwhelming as the information was difficult to find. This situation allowed me to show myself that I could rise to the challenge and, thereby, to manage the stress. It is important to highlight the fact that I made a final presentation in Stockholm based on the work carried out in front of the head of the division of Structural Engineering and Bridges at KTH Royal Insitute of Technology Raid Karoumi and Typsa's staff. Doing this researching work I reached some interesting conclusions, obtaining the highest grade with an honorific mention.During those six months, I improved some of the skills that my daily work demanded such as agility, perseverance, time managing, forward-thinking, communication and global awareness. Besides the personal skills, I also enhanced my knowledge about Finite Element Analysis through Ansys and Abaqus, structural design, bridge assessment, statistical methods (Weibull Approach, Rayleigh approach, Rain flow method) and data processing among others.
