As part of my studies, I spent a year as an intern doing an industrial placement at Merck KGaA in Darmstadt, Germany. During this time I was acquianted with one of the company's large-scale projects. My year in placement taught me about what it means to work for one of Europe's largest science and technology companies and how projects are started, constructed, and run.My internship developed many of the skills I'd learned at university level, and allowed me to apply the knowledge I had gained. I spent a lot of time analysing and updating P&IDs, working with pressure vessel documentation, and spent time on-site to see the progression of the plant.In the latter half of my placement I wrote my Masters Dissertation on the Feasibility of On-Site Methanol Synthesis from Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide. Though this project was only in its early days at Merck during my time there, it has seen considerable interest and will continue to be developed as I complete my study in Manchester.

This job entailed myself and another leader supervising a group of fifteen young people during team-building exercises, activity planning and their final Social Action Project. I organised team events and reflection sessions to encourage the young people to develop their own teamwork and leadership skills, and used my own experience with these skills to give them advice to improve.Despite being quite apart from my usual career interests, I found this job to be very rewarding as it allowed me to further my communication skills, which previously I was not as confident in. However, after four weeks, during which clear communication to my tream was necesary, I noticed these skills had grown and I gained much more confidence to lead a team in future.I am proud to say that my group raised hundreds of pounds for their idea of renovating the elderly wards in their local hospital.

This role was my first taste of the working world, and allowed me to develop my ability to work under a time-constraint. I found this to be a fast-paced job as I had many responsibilities which needed completing in a fixed time-frame, and I found communication with my colleagues to be invaluable to complete our tasks to a high standard in time.
