As the director of Informatics, I lead Software Development, SQA, Data Management and Lab Automation. Our Data Management team delivers custom data files and service to business customers, using a configurable in-house developed application that leverages our proprietary LIMS. The LIMS SQL database is customized to integrate with Oracle/Peoplesoft, Salesforce, Active Directory and other data sources to provide rich business intelligence metrics and analytics opportunities. The Lab Automation team provides operational support to our scientists who manufacture and run assays on the Luminex / Quanterix platforms, using Tecan EVO liquid handling robots. This is an innovative, problem-solving group that uses programming, metrics gathering, device integration and fabrication to improve workflows, lower costs and gain efficiency.

As the Software Development Manager, I led the team responsible for developing computerized solutions for the company’s needs. Our flagship in-house Lab Information Management System (LIMS) is centered on a SQL Server database, which is critical to business operations. As such, my software team also serves as the Database Administrators for our SQL Server database systems. Because of the broad exposure to various business units and the intimate relationship between software applications and data storage, the Software Development group is also in a unique position to intuitively consume, analyze and report important company business intelligence data.

I was recruited by Rules Based Medicine, Inc. to provide software development and lab automation services for this emergent startup company. As the company grew, I helped manage a constant cycle of efficiency and quality improvements. Intimate knowledge of the technology and processes enabled me to quickly analyze and organize projects, to provide impactful solutions to facilitate growth.

As my software skills became more evident in my lab work, Luminex eventually moved me into the software development group. There I developed high level interfaces to the Luminex data acquisition systems, created data regression and analysis libraries, and designed/integrated databases in Access and SQL. I ultimately served as lead developer on the Luminex LDS and Luminex 100 IS software projects, providing customers a rich interface to acquire / analyze their multiplex immunoassay data.

Luminex provided an amazing opportunity for me as I started on my career path. As a Research Associate, I developed multiplex immunoassays and helped develop the novel FlowMetrix and Luminex100 systems. To assist in my lab work, I created data analysis and test software used by assay development and engineering teams. I also built and maintained a software test lab, using imaging technology to keep a library of several base systems.

This was a great family-owned construction company, that employed me throughout my college years during semester breaks. I learned so much from the people at this company and got to experience a wide variety of work from building spreadsheets / macros / databases, to all manner of physical labor, to installing cleanrooms / cleanroom components at Texas Instruments, to serving as a junior foreman on an office buildout project. It not only helped me pay for the bulk of my college education, but was probably equally formative in many ways.
