About Barbara Abrams

Barbara ABRAMS.Teaching PhilosophyIn my teaching, I have two main objectives: to motivate each student in the classroom, and to teach him/her an appreciation for the French language, and French and Francophone cultures. I seek this through a tripartite methodology: (1) establishing a dynamic and supportive classroom environment, (2) utilizing a variety of media and (3) infusing every course with an element of French or Francophone culture.I always balance context and culture as the essential components of my syllabus. For example, in an advanced conversation course, each student has the semester to research an aspect of the French-speaking world that interests him or her. I encourage a respectful, open discussion of all themes and works. The students’ insight and intellectual growth drive my classes and keep our profession exciting. I believe that a teacher must always be a learner. My scholarship coupled with the constant renewal of my teaching skills, inform my work in the classroom. My diverse areas of interest keep the conversation in class lively and current.

As a scholar, and teacher, I am committed to the broad mission of the Liberal Arts and Humanities Education. I am passionate about the value of Study Abroad and language immersion. Over the past eleven years I have successfully built French and French Studies Major and Minor programs at Suffolk University. My innovations include the implementation of our Suffolk University Study Abroad programs in France, which I continue to direct and supervise on-site, including monitoring the home placements of students at Vichy. I also advise and place students at La Sorbonne Paris IV for the year and semester courses. At present, we have over 200 students in French language, literature and area studies and at last count, we have 20 majors in our program. I developed a tracking system which reports back to our department. Our employment record after graduation is 100% for students who have sought jobs in related fields. We work very closely with the French consulate and the Teaching assistantship program.
