I have been working in the Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Disability sectors for over 30 years. Originally a teacher of the deaf, I have held positions including Resource Provision Lead, Inclusion Manager, and LA Complex Needs Manager. I have worked in Local Authorities, schools (special and mainstream) and the voluntary sector. In three local authorities I established innovative and popular short break schemes as part of Aiming High for Disabled Children. I also worked abroad with disabled children and their families in Thailand, Australia and Malaysia.In July 2011 I founded ASEND, a consultancy providing advice on all barriers to learning including SEN and disabilities to schools and colleges. I have established a team of skilled and experienced professionals from education, health and social care who share a dedication to overcoming obstacles so that every child can achieve their potential. They work in partnership with teachers and school managers to bring about sustainable change.Myy colleagues and I support schools to provide an outstanding education to all children, whatever their abilities and needs. The basis of all my work is the firm belief that every child and young person, whether or not they are disabled, have SEN, speak English as an additional language or have social issues, has a capacity to learn and develop if barriers to learning are broken down. Every young person has a contribution to make to society and the right to a fulfilled life. This conviction has driven my work as a specialist teacher, senior manager and consultant in the field of disability and special educational needs. Our collaboration with educational establishments results in better behaviour, raised standards, improved results and young people who can make a contribution to society
