Barbara Hoffert authors Library Journal’s Prepub Alert, which annually previews 1500 titles six months in advance of publication, and the magazine’s yearly book preview, published at the beginning of the year and featuring 400-plus titles. She manages the magazine’s long-running Day of Dialog, now twice-yearly virtual events open to librarians and the public, organizing panels featuring seventy authors she selects from twenty to twenty-five publishers. For nearly four decades, she has also assigned and written reviews on literary fiction and poetry for the magazine. She is past president, awards chair, and treasurer of the National Book Critics Circle, which awarded her its inaugural Service Award in 2023. She is also a past chair of the Materials Selection Committee of the RUSA (Reference and User Services Assn.) division of the American Library Association and a 2020 Big Other Literary Citizenship Awardee. She’s especially interested in literature addressing edgy social and intellectual issues in gorgeous language, and she likes discovering unexpected gems from unexpected publishers and imprints.
