As result of the 1999 substantial destruction of the infrastructure, Timor-Leste has spent the last 20 years rebuilding the country.Unfortunately, as there are a number of areas needing assistance, the disability population have had minimum support, leading to their economic and social exclusion. This includes over 17,000 hearing impaired children and adults throughout Timor-Leste.After seeing the lack of such an important essential service, I extended my time in Timor and established Hearing First Steps, to assist the hearing impaired to lead a more fulfilling life. The organisation has seen over 1,100 children and adults and provided over 140 hearing aids, in addition we have expanded to include an education aspect. As 70% of the people seen have self inflicted ear infections or punctured ear drums, due to the lack of ear and ear care knowledge and using sticks, feathers etc to clean or itch ears. The education program expanded to a formal training module for all preschool teachers, to "Identify and Assist the Hearing Impaired" preschool students through HANDS / Ministry of Education. HFS is proactive in working with schools, doctors, medical clinics and in the communities and training local Timorese staff.Being an expat starting a non-profit organisation in Timor-Leste was very challenging, which took persistence, patience, networking and flexibility. However the success of HFS and changing lives made the work very fulfilling.
