The CE is responsible for a staff of 500 fte (excluding contracted services) and for total assets of $2.4 billion and an annual budget of approximately $130 million. Oversight of 5 Council Controlled Organisations including the regional Economic Development Agency (Venture Taranaki), New Plymouth Airport, and the Council's investment management company.

Responsible for all front-line services and the organisation's customer service strategy - functional responsibilities included customer support, regulatory services, environmental planning and consents, community development, cultural services, recreational facilities and events, and parks and open spaces. Led the development of "Customer First", a comprehensive customer service strategy which has endured. NPDC has been nationally recognised with several awards for the quality of its customer service.
